Seasonal cleaning calendar

Vancouver does not get four cleaning seasons. It gets a wet season, a dry season, and two transitions where everything gets tracked in. This calendar is built around that, not around a magazine’s idea of spring.

Why the usual spring-cleaning advice fails here

Read this first

From October to April, the job in a Vancouver home is moisture: window tracks, bathroom ventilation, entry mats and anything upholstered. From May to September it is light and dust: windows, blinds, balcony and the high shelves you can finally see.

The two transition months — late March and late September — are when you reset the whole home. Put the heavy jobs there and the rest of the year stays manageable.

01Spring (March–May)

The reset. Open the home up and deal with what winter left behind.

02Summer (June–August)

Light, dust and the high places.

03Fall (September–November)

The transition into the wet season — the most important round in Vancouver.

04Winter (December–February)

Moisture management, mostly.

A realistic split for a two-bedroom home. One deep clean in late March and one in late September covers about 80% of the work. Between them, a two-hour regular clean every two weeks keeps the home stable. Trying to do a “full spring clean” in one weekend in a rainy city usually means the windows and the storage get done and nothing else does.
